The guide: Before the Knock

How to tell if your roof may have hail damage, from the ground.

Three things, all on the ground with your phone. Stay off the roof. The hail is gone; the evidence isn’t.

  • 1 · Tonight, with your phonePhotograph your car, your AC unit, your mailbox, and the ground under a downspout. The phone’s timestamp is your date. If you saved a hailstone or there’s one left in the shade, photograph it next to a coin.
  • 2 · Tomorrow morning, in daylightWalk the yard. Stripped leaves, dents in soft metal (vents, gutters, window screens), black grit under downspouts. Photograph what you find. Stay off the roof.
  • 3 · When someone knocksTake the card, say “I’m getting a written report first,” and sign nothing. A real contractor will still be here next week.

3 of the 12 questions to ask anyone who knocks: Where’s your shop? Will I get photos of my roof in writing? Who’s there when my adjuster comes? All 12 come with the guide.

Two ways to look at a roof

A stranger on your roof, or a drone.

Same house. Same hail. Two very different afternoons.

Someone at the door

Climbs your roof. Shows you the one slope they chose. You have to be home. Leaves a card.

Our drone

Nobody on your roof. Every slope, every hit circled. You don’t have to be home. Leaves a dated report.

If your roof is fine, the report says so. You keep it either way, and nobody calls to argue with it.

Fair questions

Straight answers.

Is it really free?
Yes. The survey, the written report and “Before the Knock” cost nothing and come with no obligation. The report is yours whether you ever call us again or not.
Do I have to be home?
No. We fly from your driveway or the street with your OK, photograph your roof only, and leave. The report lands in your email that evening and a printed copy at the door.
Who flies the drone?
Someone from the Legacy crew, with your permission, over your roof only. Neighbors’ roofs are cropped out of anything we keep or show.
What about my insurance?
We’re a roofing contractor, not a public adjuster: we don’t file, negotiate or handle claims. If the report shows damage and you decide to file, we’re on-site when your adjuster inspects so the photos speak for themselves. Whether anything is covered is between you, your policy and your carrier.
Someone already knocked. Is it too late?
No. If you signed nothing, you’re where everyone else is. If you took a card, ask them the 12 questions and ask us the same ones. If you signed something, read it tonight; Texas gives you a short window to cancel most door-to-door contracts.
What if the report finds nothing?
Then it says so, in writing, with the date. Keep it: it’s your “before” for the next storm, and DFW always gets a next storm.

Because your own photos, dated to the storm, are worth more than anyone’s opinion at the door.
